撐著油紙傘，獨自彷徨在悠長，悠長又寂寥的雨巷，我希望逢著一個丁香一樣的，結著愁怨的姑娘。
她是有丁香一樣的顏色，丁香一樣的芬芳，丁香一樣的憂愁，在雨中哀怨，哀怨又彷徨；她彷徨在這寂寥的雨巷，撐著油紙傘，詩人眼中的丁香姑娘，像我一樣，像我一樣地默默彳�。╟hì chù）著，冷漠，凄清，又惆悵。
她靜默地走近，走近，又投出，太息（“太”通“嘆”，太息就是嘆息的意思）一般的眼光。
她飄過像夢一般的，像夢一般的凄婉迷茫。像夢中飄過一枝丁香的，我身旁飄過這女郎；她靜默地遠了，遠了，到了頹圮(pǐ)的籬墻，走盡這雨巷。
在雨的哀曲里，消了她的顏色，散了她的芬芳，消散了，甚至她的太息般的眼光，丁香般的惆悵。

《雨巷》1927年夏天，寫成后差不多一年，作者將它投寄到《小說月報》。當時代理《小說月報》編輯的葉圣陶一看到這首詩就非常喜歡，稱它“替新詩的音節(jié)開了一個新的紀元”，并送給作者“雨巷詩人”的稱號。這一年，作者才22歲。
一首好的抒情詩，應該是藝術美的結晶。它會超越時間和空間的限制而喚起人們審美的感情。然而多年來，《雨巷》和戴望舒的其他一些詩作，卻被視為象征派和現代派的無病呻吟而排斥在文學史的視野外；多年以后，人們才像觀賞出土文物一樣，把這些作品從遺忘的塵土中挖掘出來，又重新看到了它們身上的藝術光輝。
這首詩寫得既實又虛，朦朧恍惚。“我”似乎有著滿腹的心事，無限的煩憂，但又不愿明說，或者是說不出來。“我”似乎在期待什么、追求什么，而期待和追求的目標又顯得那樣遙遠而渺茫。“她”出現了，這或許是在幻覺中，或者是真的，但“她”的出現是那樣地快，逝去也那樣地快，一剎那間擦肩而過，消失在前方，“像夢一般的凄婉迷茫”。“我”只有自怨自艾，自悲自嘆。詩中的“姑娘”，我們可以認為是實指，是詩人心中期待已久的美麗、高潔而憂郁的姑娘。但我們也可以把這位“姑娘”當做詩人心中朦朧的理想和追求，代表了詩人陷入人生苦悶時，對未來渺茫的憧憬。
