我國(guó)古代在清明時(shí)節(jié)就有插柳植樹(shù)的傳統(tǒng)，而近代植樹(shù)節(jié)則最早由美國(guó)的內(nèi)布拉斯加州發(fā)起。19世紀(jì)以前，內(nèi)布拉斯加州是一片光禿禿的荒原，樹(shù)木稀少，土地干燥，大風(fēng)一起，黃沙漫天，人民深受其苦。1872年，美國(guó)著名農(nóng)學(xué)家朱利葉斯·斯特林·莫爾頓提議在內(nèi)布拉斯加州規(guī)定植樹(shù)節(jié)，動(dòng)員人民有計(jì)劃地植樹(shù)造林。當(dāng)時(shí)州農(nóng)業(yè)局通過(guò)決議采納了這一提議，并由州長(zhǎng)親自規(guī)定今后每年4月份的.第三個(gè)星期三為植樹(shù)節(jié)。這一決定做出后，當(dāng)年就植樹(shù)上百萬(wàn)棵。此后的16年間，又先后植樹(shù)6億棵，終于使內(nèi)布拉斯加州10萬(wàn)公頃的荒野變成了茂密的森林。為了表彰莫爾頓的功績(jī)，1885年州議會(huì)正式規(guī)定以莫爾頓先生的生日4月22日為每年的植樹(shù)節(jié)，并放假一天。
在美國(guó)，植樹(shù)節(jié)是一個(gè)州定節(jié)日，沒(méi)有全國(guó)統(tǒng)一規(guī)定的日期。但是每年4、5月間，美國(guó)各州都要組織植樹(shù)節(jié)活動(dòng)。例如，羅德艾蘭州規(guī)定每年5月份的第二個(gè)星期五為植樹(shù)節(jié)，并放假一天。其他各州有的是固定日期，也有的是每年由州長(zhǎng)或州的其他政府部門(mén)臨時(shí)決定植樹(shù)節(jié)日期。每當(dāng)植樹(shù)節(jié)到來(lái)，以學(xué)生為主的社會(huì)各界群眾組成浩浩蕩蕩的植樹(shù)大軍，投入植樹(shù)活動(dòng)。
