大象是群居動物。一群大象中總有一只德高望重[注:德：品德;望：聲望。道德高尚，名望很大。]的領(lǐng)頭象，他既要帶領(lǐng)象群遷徙，又要保護象群免受其它野獸攻擊，所以責(zé)任重大，任務(wù)艱巨。
大象是一種古老的哺乳動物。早在幾百萬年以前，它就與恐龍等動物共同生活在地球上，后來恐龍滅絕了，但大象卻頑強地生存了下來，說明大象適應(yīng)環(huán)境能力比較強。今天看來，只要人類盡力保護大象，大象作為一種動物種類再繼續(xù)生存幾百萬年是不成問題的。
