東漢有個(gè)對(duì)佛教教義很有研究的學(xué)者，叫牟融。他引用儒家的詩(shī)書(shū)向儒者宣講佛經(jīng)，受到了一些儒者的責(zé)難，指斥他為什么不直接依據(jù)佛經(jīng)來(lái)回答問(wèn)題。于是牟融講了音樂(lè)家公明儀的故事；公明儀對(duì)著一頭正吃草的牛彈了一首高深的曲子，牛毫不理會(huì)，只顧自己吃草，后來(lái)公明儀改彈像墳子、牛蠅和小牛叫喚的.聲音，牛就搖著尾巴、豎起耳朵來(lái)聽(tīng)了。他最后說(shuō)：所以，對(duì)沒(méi)有讀過(guò)佛經(jīng)的人直接談佛經(jīng)，等于白講，成語(yǔ)對(duì)牛彈琴據(jù)此而來(lái)。

During the Warring States Period, there was a musician named Gongmingyi, who played musical instruments very well. Many people liked listen to him play, and respected him very much.
在戰(zhàn)國(guó)時(shí)期，有一個(gè)名字叫公明儀的音樂(lè)家，他很會(huì)彈琴。很多人都喜歡聽(tīng)他彈琴，人們很敬重他。
One day, Gongmingyi saw a cow when he was having fun in the countryside.
一天，公明儀在郊外游玩時(shí)，看到了一頭正在埋頭吃草的大黃牛。
He thought, "Everybody compliments my music. Why don't I play for this cow?"
他心里想：“大家都贊揚(yáng)我的'琴技高超，不如我給這頭牛也彈一曲吧！”
So he took out his guqin, He played a piece of elegant quaint music for the cow, but the cow just kept grazing the grass with its head down.
于是，他拿出心愛(ài)的琴，給牛彈奏了一曲古雅的曲子，可是牛還是在埋頭吃草，根本就沒(méi)搭理他。
He thought that the cow might not listen to the elegant quaint music. He played another piece of joyful music, but the cow still kept its head down to graze the grass and totally ignored him.
他想，�？赡懿惶�(tīng)古雅的曲子，于是他又彈奏了一曲歡快的曲子，牛依然埋頭吃草不理他。
Gongmingyi was so disappointed and started to question his ability.
公明儀非常失望，開(kāi)始懷疑自己的琴技。
Someone passing by saw this scene and said, "It's not because your ability is bad. It is that the cow cannot understand music at all."
有個(gè)路過(guò)的人看到這個(gè)場(chǎng)景，笑著說(shuō)：“不是你彈的琴不好，而是牛根本聽(tīng)不懂��！”
Gongmingyi sighed and had to go home with the guqin.
公明儀嘆了口氣，只好抱著琴回家去了。
