          Heading For the Oscars

Although the grand ceremony of Oscar was over this year, the attention and discussion linger in the Chinese movie community and out. Some insiders hold that following global trends is the only way to develop China’s film industry. Others insist, however, that the Oscars are simply one the many awards that Americans like to crown themselves. Domestic films should maintain their distinct flavors. As a movie fan myself, I think we should strive for it to gain international recognition.

Firstly, the Oscars Award is an international recognition in terms of both artistic performance and box office revenue. With live broadcast in 50 languages, it plays a huge role in shaping the global film industry. It is no wonder that so many people around the world pay much attention to it. The reality is that Hollywood movies account for more than 90 percent of global market shares-this has inevitable worldwide impact. Obviously, the Oscars Award has become something that we can not afford to ignore it.

Moreover, we live in a global, multicultural world where different cultures interact. China’s movie industry needs to realize it and sharpen its competitive edge. If Chinese films are to make a global impact, then movie production, distribution and marketing organization need improving. Chinese films should adjust to satisfy the variety of social demands. The introduction of foreign successful formulas and technology is a must for Chinese film industry. It is parochial to think that China can only use its national characteristics to define domestic movies. Conservatism will hinder the progress of film industry. If China does not develop its film industry through embracing innovative multiculturalism, Chinese movies will have little opportunity to gain a share in the international market.

Last but not least, the Hollywood films also conform to specific cultural demands. Take this year’s Academy Awards as an example, nominated movies include both high-cost productions like The Lord of the Rings and subtle, more moderate budgeted projects like Lost in Translation, these films suggest that Hollywood movies maintain a basic balance in keeping the style of its own and absorbing diverse cultures. Hence, the Chinese filmmakers should spare no efforts to present original domestic films to foreign viewers. We will be left behind if we stick to the so-called orthodox. For instance, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon was acted by Chinese actors and through cultural icons, but actually its style and structure of the movie all conform to a Hollywood formula. This partly explains why it appeals to a wider range of audiences from different cultural background.

In a word, the Oscars are very important to Chinese filmmakers. Nominations are a kind of approval by international peers of their achievements. As China’s market improves, its movie industry will get stronger and will eventually cash in on the Oscars.

Due to the increased enrollment of college studentsin recent years, the total number of graduatescoming out at the same time is such that manycollege graduates have difficulties in procuring jobs, especially when the economy is suffering slowdown. And then many scholars suggest that collegesshould lay emphasis onvocational training bysetting relative courses in the college curriculum so that graduates are more likely to beemployed. Taking the employers’ requirement into consideration, that is, working experience, the suggestion seems reasonable. However, I think, even if universities become vocation-oriented, it can not serve well for the employment. Besides, the vocational orientation will doharm to the higher education.

Firstly, the suggestion seems to be based on the fact that new college graduates may havelearned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities. In accord with this suggestion, ifcollege students have received enough vocational training and gained experience in internship, they are likely to get employed. Admittedly, self-improvement is crucial for new graduates tohunt jobs. But the suggestion does not take into account job vacancies in the present. ThoughChina’s economy keeps growing at a rate of about 9% in the recent and the number of jobsdoes increase, too many graduates coming out at a time will create great pressure for the jobmarket. As an official stated, “the grand college enrollment plan is one of the main reasons forthe current unemployment issue”. Therefore, even if college students have enough experienceand skills, will they succeed in procuring jobs when there are no positions available at all?

Secondly, vocational orientation is to the detriment of the higher learning in the long term.Let us beginwith the difference in goals between university and vocational training. As collegestudents may decide tofinish his studies after graduation or may continue at a higherlevel, university courses should thus provide both basic knowledge and a sound basis for furtherstudies. In vocational training, the goals of a given course are distinct, that is, the course isdesigned to teach trainees basic knowledge and skills. In consequence, if universities arevocation-oriented, students at college can not get prepared in class for a higher level oflearning. Predictably, the pyramid of higher learning will crumble if universities can notproduceenough qualified students.

In conclusion, vocation-orientation may help improve graduates’ skills but it can not increasethe numberof available positions. The suggestion just offers a wrong remedy, and will do harmto the higher learning.

Ambition is the decision one makes and the resolution with which he carries out that decision. It provides us with the required driving force to accomplish any undertakings in our life. Just as Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer put it,“And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.” Indeed, once we make up our minds to choose to do something, then our life becomes meaningful and specifically orientated. This notion of life, as far as I observe, is closest to truth and does apply to almost all aspects of life. First things first, ambition renders us a sense of mission.

No matter what decision you make you have to be responsible for your choice. Your choice procures you a sense of orientation, or more specially a sense of mission. And only a strong mission may enable one to accomplish greatness. Caesar of the ancient Roman Empire was urged by his ambition “I came, I saw, I conquered.” And became an unrivaled empire builder in the history of Rome. John Milton, stimulated always by his ambition that aimed at writing some “mighty lines” which England would unwillingly forget, had in due time secured his position as the second Shakespeare in the history of English literature. In the second place, ambition can bring one’s potentials to the full. Ambition may well serve as a catalyst activating one’s dormant potentials. Without ambition one’s potentials will remain slumbering like a dormant volcano. A case in point is Ms Zhang Haidi, a Chinese Helen Keller. It was her ambition to be a useful person has turned the almost paralyzed Zhang Haidi into a well-accomplished figure whose achievements would dwarf those of some normal people aim at the sun, though, at worst, they may probably land on the moon. Influential as it is upon us, however, ambition must be channeled in the right direction. If wrongly directed, one’s ambition may bring havoc on him and others. Hitler, whose ambition was to conquer Europe by whatever evil means, finally turned him into a demon. It was this demon that almost cast Europe into an unfathomable abyss of anguish and suffering. Another case is Macbeth whose ambition was to become the king of Scotland. However, his ambition was materialized by the murder of King Duncan. Consequently, unbearable guilt and psychological agony drove him to his tragic doom. To sum up, ambition can benefit us tremendously if wisely and correctly channeled, otherwise it may ruin others and ourselves. A poet says: life can be bad; life can be good; life can be dirty; life can be sad,; life can even be painful. In my mind’s eye, a person can make his life beautiful, meaningful and rewarding and stand out as a respectable personage if he is motivated by a well-orientated ambition.

          The Validity of College Rankings

The publication of college rankings each year would draw increasing attention from interested people. Those people include reporters, college administrators and faculty, alumni, parents, and high school students.Together with other popular guidebooks, college rankings feature data on the overall universities and colleges in China.Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet once stated that “what is in a name? That which we calla rose.By any other name would smell as sweet.”We can ask a similar question over the college rankings:what is in a number?

Some scholars warn that college rankings use objective measures to evaluate subjective considerations so that they can only tell a prospective college student a limited amount. In my opinion,we should take several rankings into consideration to evaluate a specific college’s place in the ranking, instead of only relying on one ranking.

Firstly,to decide whether college rankings give a college a fair shake,it is crucial to look at the methodology of the ranking system. While one system may conclude peer assessment, retention rate, facultyresources, student selectivity, and financial resources, another system may lay its emphasis on the number of famous alumni, the student evaluation of professors and the evaluation of college students.Accordingly, the same university may rank top in one publication of one ranking system, but be reduced to theaverage university category in another ranking system.

Generally speaking, based on the same criteria, the rankings can objectively reflect the strength of a certain university, but it can not tell the whole story ofa college.Besides, many universities are characterized by their unique disciplines.

We can not simply reach conclusion that a music and drama university is worse than a technological university according to their places in the ranking system.

Secondly, college rankings are likely to be manipulated, which inevitably reduces their authority and trustability. As a president from a famous university revealed, one college ranking compiling organizationonce visited him and insinuated that if the president agreed to sponsor their organization, they could put the college in higher places of ranking.

According to some news report, this phenomenon is not rare. Many universities have been invited to “corporate”with some ranking compiling organizations. Can we still believe that college rankings reflect the strength of some universities when some universities sponsor the compiling in exchange of higher places in the ranking?

In a word, college rankings,an important means to evaluate universities, are based on different methodologies. As one methodology only focuses on certain aspects of higher learning,we have to consult with several ranking systems and then we can find out the whole story of a university. We should also be cautious about the manipulation behind the scenes.

As one famous professor stated,“One can onlyappreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese literaturethroughthe complex Chinese characters.” What theprofessor wants to convey is that complex Chinesecharacters are manifestation of traditional Chineseaesthetics. However, since the foundation of thePRC,China began to adopt simplified Chinesecharacters,so that illiteracy can be more easily eliminated.

Undoubtedly, the introduction of simplified Chinese characters contributes to China’smodernization. Sowhen a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that weshould return to Complex Chinese Characters, ongoing debates ensued with vehemence.Personally,it is impractical to return to Complex Chinese Characters, but individuals canvoluntarily make efforts to know Complex Chinese Characters.

Firstly, since the simplified characters have played an indispensable role in people’s lives, wewill have to pay the price if we return to Complex Chinese Characters. To be specific, education administration has to bear the burden of changing textbooks; the corporateworld will have to change their advertisements, contracts and other documents; thegovernment has to change their seals, documents, agreements and treaties with foreignnations. Of course there are other costs resulting from the return to Complex ChineseCharacters. But the question lies in who are willing to bear the costs. In some impoverishedareas, many families can not afford to receive education; when the global economy is reducedto a slow-down,the corporate world is making efforts to cut costs. Therefore,I perceivethe policy of returning to Complex Chinese Characters will trigger oppositions from the public.

Secondly, considering the amount of complex Chinese characters, can all the Chinese learnto recognize them overnight? While students have the time to learn Complex ChineseCharacters, what about people in other domains? The corporate world can not afford tointerrupt their business, government officials and civil servants can not be distracted fromrunning our country, doctors and nurses have to be at work in case that emergency arises,to list three typical domains that will be affected by the policy.

Admittedly, returning to Complex Chinese Characters will help preserve traditional Chineseculture. WhenChina becomes more involved in the world, western cultures, especiallyAmerican culture, have influenced Chinese people at an unprecedented level. Many youngpeople look to learning foreign culture as fashionable. However, the obvious benefits cannot make us embrace the policy with open arms, for we should also bear in mind whether thepolicy is feasible.

          On Illusion

Some people are committed to their dreams andwork hard to achieve their goals. What is guidingthem is akind of illusion. Some people think thatillusion is good for success while others argue thatit is not sogood because it may get peopleunrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion isnecessary in our life only if it is encouraging andrealistic.

There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead peopleto thepath they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each momentwholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyardgarden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our stepsand smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.

Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has everseen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlikewonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how oldthey are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shouldrs would straighten and joywould reappear in his eyes. Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-endingadventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but togive up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. Ifwe cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, likethe head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcraftsfurniture. We cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Whereveryou want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.

          Is the Donors’ List Acceptable?

Living in a world of change, we can not predict whatwill happen in the future. We probably will be reducedto helplessness by unexpected accidents andnatural disasters. It will be greatly appreciated thatmany unknown people will offer helping hands. Asusual, donors’ names and donations are made publicin bulletin board or in other forms by donationproposal initiators. It is believed that the juxtaposition of donors’names and their donationwill make compliments to donors and encourage more people to offer a helping hand. For me, Ithink it is enough to tell the public what donation has been collected by initiators but donors’names and their donation should not be made public.

Firstly, while people consider offering a helping hand, they do not intentionally expect beingrewarded. When the donors’ list is made public, the public will not only be impressed by thebenevolence of the donors, they will also believe that those donors are expecting complimentsfrom both the public and donation receivers. In the case that there are donors who donatemuch more money than average, it is likely that thepublic will accuse those generous donorsof showing off, instead of complimenting their benevolence and generosity. While people donot expect reward for their benevolence, they do not expect accusation, either. Besides, benevolence can not be measured by the amount of donations. The publication of donors’ listmay direct people to think otherwise. Those who donate more money would be regarded morebenevolent than thosewho donate less. Anyway, it is unfair to accuse those who donate dueamount in accord with their purse.

Secondly, the publication of donors’ list may pose potential dangers to donors. Generallyspeaking, people will donate what is reasonable in line with their financial situations. Thosewho rank high in big companies or run their own business usually are expected to donatemore money. However, for many Chinese people, making a name is not a good thing. That iswhy business people always keep silent when asked how much money they have earned. Onereason for their being afraid of making a name is that malicious people will become jealous. Insome extreme cases, criminals may calculate the amount of affordable ransom based on thedonation if they kidnap these wealthy donors.

Finally, what concerns donors most is whether their donations can be timely forwarded tothose in need. Given aforementioned negative impact of donors’ list, it is not necessary tomake a donors’ list.

As is shown above, in the middle of the cartoon stands + 主題詞,which symbolizes + 主題詞的另一種表達(dá),+ 同位語即主題詞第三種表達(dá) + 表示主題詞動(dòng)作的非謂語動(dòng)詞。

例如:in the middle of the cartoon stands a hot pot, which symbolizes culture, the one containing many Chinese culture symbol. The drawers intention seems to be highly self-evident and the meaning causes us to be thought-provoking.

It is therefore safe to draw the conclusion that + 主題詞 + is momentous and fundamental to the mind what food is vital and significant to the body.

Not only I, but also the best philosophers and poets also praise that this concept should be a permanent universal values. Obviously, I can think of no better reasons for the phenomenon other than the following two.

Initially, the millennia-long run of + 主題詞 + left us with a lot of traditions that are extremely profoundly rooted. 加拓展句:主題詞 is a kind of emotional strength, which can support us no matter how dark around us becomes.

Additionally, our governments effective measures and policies are playing a significant role in the realization of such a situation(加拓展句:without 主題句,the heart would break.

Just as an old Arab proverb has it, there is a growing tendency for the public in the west to think the significance of + 主題詞.

From what has been discussed above, the most important thing is not to say, but instead to do. Chinese citizens are expected to enhance their awareness that it is an indispensable part for the construction of harmonious society. Only in this way, can we /our country/ the individual have a glorious future.

In a word, the Oscars are very important to Chinese filmmakers. Nominations are a kind of approval by international peers of their achievements. As China’s market improves, its movie industry will get stronger and will eventually cash in on the Oscars.

Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, thenumber of university graduates has been on theincrease since the central government startedimplementing the plan. Though the plan helpsimprove our national quality,it creates pressure forthe job markets. With so many collegestudentscoming out at a time, many graduates havedifficulties in finding suitable jobs. In order to create more jobs, the government encouragescollege graduates to work in villages of 28 provinces and regions with a view that ruraladministration willbe strengthened at the same time. As a result, tens of thousands collegegraduates have been appointed as village officials in the rural areas. It appears that this planhelps alleviate the pressure caused by graduate employment, but I do not think the plan willwork in the long run.

Firstly, after serving as village officials in the rural areas for two years, the majority of thosecollege village officials will start to look for jobs in the job market again, aggravating thepressure of the job market. Some may argue that the number of those village officials whoenter the job market again is balanced by the number of new college graduates who would beappointed as village officials. The truth is that while those students have spent two years in therural areas, they do not gain enough experience in the corporate world and are likely to forgetwhat they have learnt in college. In this sense, they are not guaranteed to find decent jobsagain. Besides, when working in the rural areas, these students with higher degrees arerespected by village people, and are likely to get accustomed to feeling superior to peoplearound them. One can imagine they would probably be frustrated when they work with thosewho hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees.

Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demand of our society are unbalanced, the imbalance can be obtained by increasing available jobs or decreasing the supply ofcollege graduates, which means the reduction of college enrollment. Given the fact that theeconomy slows down in the recent, it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good termsfor graduates such as well-paid salary and residential certificate guarantee, the governmentcan create more jobs in the short term, but does not provide long-term remedy. In this sense, the plan does not solve the fundamental imbalance between the supply and the demand ofcollege graduates.

In sum, the plan to encourage college graduates to work in the rural areas can only provide atemporary remedy for the job market. I think the government should recognize thefundamental imbalance and find the way back toelite education.

People may choose to keep their old traditions from their native country or to accept new ones. Keeping the old customs will help one to overcome the cultural shock and the change of the environment. From the other side, accepting the new traditions will help one to adapt and make new friends with residents. In this essay I will give different reasons why people decide to follow the customs of the new country or to keep their own customs.

If one is from the country with strong and old traditions, I think it will be rather difficult for him to adapt to the new customs and moreover to reject his own. That is why some people from the same country try to live together and to create their own community where the old traditions are kept. They can not break the customs that were created by their ancestors. For example, some nations are restricted in certain kinds of food by their traditions. So, they do not go to the restaurants unless their traditional food is served there. Some nations according to their customs have to wear certain types of cloth because their religion tells them to do so.

From the other side, if one is from the country with traditions similar to ones of the new country it will be easy for him to adopt and to follow the customs of the new place. He will not feel much difference. Probably, the most difficult part of his relocation will be to accustom to the new climate.

I think that people of the new country are friendlier when they see that foreigner follows their customs. I belief that traditions of every country deserve respect, especially, when one lives there. In summary, I think that every country has its own beauty and if one wants to find out more about it he will love it.

This is Teachers Day and a time to be grateful to all teachers. This profession deserves the special recognition and respect. There is no more appropriate time than this to honour you and others in your chosen field. You have my eternal gratefulness. Have a happy Teachers Day. The whole secret of the teachers force lies in the conviction that men are convertible. Teacher, who educate children, deserve more honor than parents, who merely gave them birth; for the latter provided more life, while the former ensure a good life. What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul. My heart felt thanks to you, dear teacher. On the voyage of life, you have kindled the light of hope for me. What you have done enriches my mind and broadens my view. On this day I honour you sincerely.

范文 Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists? One can always find visitors taking pictures and enjoying the scenery in university compus. During the May Day Holiday, National Day Holiday, summer and winter vacations, many University campuses become popular tourist sites. In my opinion, university campus should be open to tourists. In fact, there are many royal gardens and parks, all of them obviously better than the scenery in the Universities. Why do you think people prefer visiting here with their children? That is because it is a dream goal for many Chinese parents and young ambitious students. Besides this, as more tourists come to visit universities, these universities can widen their influence as well and they can also make some profit from the tourism. In a word, I think the university compus should be open to the tourists。

范文:Disposable Plastic Bags Nowadays we may find ourselves surrounded by a sea of disposable plastic bags. And recently the problems of using disposable plastic bags have been brought into peoples focus. First of all, the use of disposable plastic bags causes irreversible harm to our environment. As these bags are not biodegradable, they are blocking the drainage system and causing water pollution. Whats more, customers using disposable plastic bags may think that they are of great convenience. But what they dont quite realize is that there will be remarkable negative impact on our health. And sometimes careless disposal of these bags may even poison some innocent animals. In view of the severity of this issue, effective measures have been taken in our country. There has been a strict limit on the using of disposable plastic bags in supermarkets, which not only enhances peoples awareness on environmental protection but also cuts down the cost of the running of supermarkets.

Nowadays, with the development of economic, more and more people have the ability to give a better education to their children. And in their eyes, study overseas is better in the domestic school. So, there are plenty of people send their kids to study abroad in a young age. They think they are doing good things for their baby. But I don’t agree with them. Going to study abroad at young age is not good for young kids.

To begin with, teenagers are not independent enough to take care of themselves. With the publishment of one children policy, most family just has one child. They are the apple in their parents’ eyes. In order to make them live better, parents will do most things for them. How can they look after themselves in abroad? If they go abroad in such a young age, they may under great stress. If so, how can they devote themselves to study? As a result, going abroad for study has no good news. Even it will have bad influence on their little heart.

In addition, teenagers’ discipline always is not very good. Not many people have a good self-discipline, special in the young age. When the children go abroad, they don’t have parents accompanied with them to remind them what should do and what shouldn’t do. It is easy for them to be attracted by some bad temptation. At that time, no one knows what happen to the kids. In a long time, it may have bad effect on their life.

In general, I don’t think going to study abroad at young age is good for kids to grow up healthily. They need parents around them. They can goo abroad when they grow up.

The popularization of computer and Internet service has created a group of people called indoorsy men or indoorsy women. They prefer to spend most of their time at home rather than going outdoors and having face-to-face contact with others. Should people choose to become indoorsy? The following are opinions from both sides. Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your views on the issue.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

          YES

In modern times when we can buy everything we need on the Internet, and communicate and even work through the Internet, becoming indoorsy men or women is simply a choice of different lifestyle. In the past, if you want to buy something, you need to go out of your house, go to the store, and spend an hour or two choosing the product you want to buy. But now you can just sit in front of a computer and click your mouse, and the product can be delivered to you. Being indoorsy can save people a lot of time.

Being indoorsy can allow people to think and work in a peaceful environment. For example, writers can be quite creative when they are alone at home without being interrupted.

Being indoorsy does not mean that people will never go out of the door. Indoorsy men or women are good at making full use of the modern technology to facilitate their life and work.

          NO

Some sociologists warn that the indoorsy lifestyle will make people become self-centered and naive. If people stay at home for a long time, they will have little interpersonal contact with others. They do not know how to have face-to-face communication with others, and they may become shy, uncomfortable, or self-centered when they are involved in real-life interpersonal communication. This indoorsy lifestyle will have a bad effect on their normal interpersonal relationship and their normal work.

Indoorsy men or women spend most of their time sitting in front of a computer, and they seldom attend outdoor activities. Watching the computer screen for a long time will do great harm to their eyes. Also, many indoorsy people do not like to attend sports activities, and in the long run, their health will get worse.
