Throughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life. With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed woodlands and prairies into farms and made lakes and reserviors out of rivers for irrigation purposes or hydroelectric power. Man has also modified the face of the earth by draining marshes and cutting through mountains to build roads and railways.
However,man's changes to the physical environment have not always had beneficial results. Today,pollution of the air and water is an increasing danger to the health of the planet. Each day thousands of tons of gases e out of the exhausts of motor vehicles. Smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrounding areas of the countryside. The pollution of water is equally harmful. The whole ecological balance of the sea is being changed and industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless.
Now environmental protection is more pressing than ever before. As we know,massive destruction of environment has brought about negative effects and even poses a great threat to man's existence. Indifference to these problems will mean mitting suicide. Therefore,effective measures should be taken and laws passed to conserve environment. Otherwise,man is certain to suffer from the serious consequences caused by this lack of care for his living surroundings.
人類有史以來不斷改變自然環(huán)境,以改善自我的生活方式.人類借助技術(shù)工具改變了地球的許多自然特征.他將林地和草原改造成為農(nóng)田,使江河變成湖泊和水庫,用于灌溉或用于水力發(fā)電.人類還經(jīng)過給沼澤地排水、鑿石劈山、修建公路和鐵路等方式,改變了地球的面貌.
然而,人類改變自然環(huán)境并不總是帶來有益的結(jié)果.今日,空氣和水的污染給地球的健康造成越來越嚴(yán)重的危害.每一天機(jī)動(dòng)車輛的排氣管排出成千上萬噸廢氣.工廠釋放的煙霧污染了工業(yè)區(qū)和周圍鄉(xiāng)村的空氣.水污染同樣有害,海洋的整個(gè)生態(tài)平衡正在受到破壞,工業(yè)廢水已使許多河流的生物死亡.
此刻,環(huán)境保護(hù)比以往任何時(shí)候都更為緊迫.我們明白,對(duì)環(huán)境的'大規(guī)模破壞已經(jīng)帶來負(fù)面影響,甚至嚴(yán)重威脅到人類的生存.對(duì)這些問題漠不關(guān)心將意味著自我毀滅.所以,應(yīng)采取有效措施并經(jīng)過法律來保護(hù)環(huán)境.不然的話,人類勢(shì)必遭受因其不關(guān)心生存環(huán)境而引起的嚴(yán)重后果之苦.

Once man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth,and natural resources seemed to be unlimited.
Today things are different. The world has bee too crowded. We are using up our natural resources,and polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this,human life on earth will not survive.
We realize that if too many fish are taken from the sea,there will soon be none left. Yet,with modern fishing methods,more and more fish are caught.We know that if too many trees are cut down,forests will disappear. Yet,we continue to use powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. We see that if rivers are polluted with waste products,we will die. Yet,waste products are
still put into rivers.
We know that if the population continues to rise at the present rate,in a few years,there won't be enough food.What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat,there will be more food available. Land for crops feeds five times more people than land where animals are kept.
Our natural resources will last longer if we learn to recycie them.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally,if we educate people to think about the problems we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.
過去,人們不必?fù)?dān)心保護(hù)環(huán)境的問題.
因?yàn)槟菚r(shí)地球上人口稀少,自然資源似乎取之不盡.
如今,一切都改變了.世界變得擁擠異常.我們正在耗盡我們的自然資源,有毒化學(xué)制品的使用也正污染著環(huán)境.如果我們繼續(xù)這樣下去,地球上的生命將不復(fù)存在.
我們都明白如果從海里捕捉太多的魚,海里就不會(huì)再有魚了.可是,現(xiàn)代化的`捕魚技術(shù)使得捕魚量越來越大.我們都明白如果砍伐太多的樹木,森林就會(huì)消失.可是,我們?nèi)耘f使用強(qiáng)大的機(jī)械砍伐越來越多的樹木.我們都明白如果河水被廢棄物污染的話,我們僅有死路一條.可是廢棄物仍然源源不斷地進(jìn)入河里.
我們明白,人口繼續(xù)照此刻這個(gè)速度增長(zhǎng)的話,不出幾年,就會(huì)發(fā)生食物短缺.我們?cè)撊绾谓鉀Q這些問題呢?
如果我們多吃蔬菜,少吃肉類的話,我們就會(huì)有更多的食物.因?yàn)橥瑯哟笮〉耐恋厝绻N莊稼的話會(huì)比養(yǎng)殖動(dòng)物多養(yǎng)活五倍多的人.
如果我們學(xué)會(huì)再利用的話,自然資源就能持續(xù)更久.
如果人們使用現(xiàn)代化的生育控制方法,世界人口就不會(huì)增長(zhǎng)如此迅猛.
最終,如果我們能夠教育人們都意識(shí)到這些問題的話,未來我們就會(huì)有一個(gè)更好、更潔凈的星球.
