　　THE BEASTS of the field and forest had a Lion as their king. He was neither wrathful, cruel, nor tyrannical, but just and gentle as a king could be. During his reign he made a royal proclamation for a general

　　assembly of all the birds and beasts, and drew up conditions for a universal league, in which the Wolf and the Lamb, the Panther and the Kid, the Tiger and the Stag, the Dog and the Hare, should live together in

　　perfect peace and amity. The Hare said, "Oh, how I have longed to see this day, in which the weak shall take their place with impunity by the side of the strong." And after the Hare said this, he ran for his life.

　　《公雞和寶玉》

　　A COCK, scratching for food for himself and his hens, found a precious stone and exclaimed: "If your owner had found thee, and not I, he would have taken thee up, and have set thee in thy first estate; but I have found

　　thee for no purpose. I would rather have one barleycorn than all the jewels in the world."

　　一只公雞在田野里為自己和母雞們尋找食物。他發(fā)現(xiàn)了一塊寶玉，便對(duì)寶玉說：“若不 是我，而是你的主人找到了你，他會(huì)非常珍惜地把你撿起來;但我發(fā)現(xiàn)了你卻毫無用處。我 與其得到世界上一切寶玉，倒不如得到一顆

　　這是說自己需要的東西才是真正珍貴的。

　　《老人與死神》

　　An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.

　　At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down all the sticks and cried out, "I cannot bear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"

　　As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."

　　"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to my shoulder?"

　　譯文

　　老人與死神

　　有個(gè)老人在森林中砍了不少柴，十分吃力地挑著走了很遠(yuǎn)的路。

　　一路上他累極了，實(shí)在挑不動(dòng)了，便扔下柴擔(dān)，叫喊起來：“這種日子我受不了了，死神啊，帶我走吧。”

　　這時(shí)，死神來了，對(duì)他說：“老頭，你想做什么，我聽見你叫我?”

　　“先生”，老人說，“您能幫忙將那擔(dān)子放在我的肩上嗎?”

　　寓意

　　即使生活不幸，人們?nèi)孕钀巯�生命�?/p>

　　《烏鴉喝水》

　　A crow, ready to die with thirst, flew with joy to a pitcher which he saw at a distance. But when he came up to it, he found the water so low that with all his stooping and straining he was unable to reach it. Thereupon he tried to bread the pitcher, then to overturn it, seeing some small pebbles at hand, he dropped a great many of them, one by one, into the pitcher, and so raised the water to the brim, and quenched his thirst.

　　譯 文

　　一只快渴死的烏鴉，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地看見一只水壺，就高興地飛了過去，但是當(dāng)他飛到的時(shí)候發(fā)現(xiàn)壺里的水淺得怎么用力彎腰伸頸也夠不著，于是他試著把水壺打破，又試著把他推倒。但是力量不足，都做不到，最后看見近邊有許多小石子，他一個(gè)個(gè)地把很多石子丟進(jìn)了水壺，這樣使水上升到壺口，就解了渴。

　　寓 意

　　遇到困難的時(shí)候動(dòng)腦筋。
