第一課時
Section A
Step 1 Review
Help the students to review “通過…方式做某事” in Book 2. “If you become a professional athlete, you’ll be able to make a living (by) doing something you love. ” “By” here means “靠….方式”, “以… 方式”。
Step 2 Presentation
Say “We usually get ready for tests by doing things, such as ‘doing exercises, reading books, asking teachers for help, etc.’” Then ask “By doing what you study for a test?” Help the students answer the question by using “by”.
Step 3 Practise
Ask the students to read the phrases and say out the Chinese meanings in 1a. Then start to practice with the help of the conversation in 1c.
Step 4 Listening
Listen to the tape and complete 1b and 2a. Encourage the students to answer every question in 2a. Then watch each question with the answer in 2b.
A point:
look up ① 抬頭看 例:He looked up too the sky and saw a plane.
② 查閱 例:When we meet new words while reading, we can look them up in a dictionary.
Step 5 Grammar Focus
Tell the students about the use of “by” ① 在…旁邊 ② 在….之前 ③ 通過….方式(本單元)
第二課時
Step 1 Revision
Review the use of “by” simply. Ask the students the questions like “ How do you study for a test? How do you learn English? How do you learn math?” etc.
Step 2 Reading
Before reading, ask a question to the students “How many students does the passage mention?” Then study the passage.
Some point:
1. He’s been learning….= He has been learning 現在完成進行時
2. watch the actors say…
watch sb. do sth 觀看某人做某事
表感覺的一些詞有類似用法:see / watch
hear / listen to sb do sth (經常做或已經做)
feel doing (正在做)
例:I often hear her play the piano.
I hear her playing the piano.
4. end up (by) doing sth. 意思是“以做….而告終”
例:Let’s end up the meeting (by) singing a song.
After studying the passage, complete the chart below it.
Step 3 Pairwork
Practise the conversation by looking at 3b.
第三課時
Section B
Step 1 Revision
Review the passage in 3a by asking questions, like “What does Lillian Li think is the best way to learn English? What about Wei Ming’s idea and Liu Chang’s idea? ” Then talk about the ideas of the students themselves.
Step 2 Presentation
Say “ You have so many good ways to learn English, but have you ever had any problems with English?”
Write the problems on the blackboard. Then check the statement in 1a and add some other problems.
A point:
pronouce v. pronunciation n. 意思是”發(fā)音”
Step 3 Listening
Before listening, look through the challenges in 2a and understand them.
Then say “You will hear a conversation between Paul and his teacher, Ms Mitchell.”
Listen and check the learning challenges in the chart.
2b. Understand the solutions in 2b and then listen again, then match the challenges in 2a with the solutions.
A point:
Practice “練習” n. 例:get a lot of practice
v. Practice sth. / doing sth. 例:Do you often practice playing the piano?
Step 4 Practice
Look at the sample conversation in 2c. First read, and then practice in pairs.
Step 5 Exercises
完成句子:
1. I study _________ (通過制作詞匯表的方式).
2. Do you ever ___________ (和朋友一起練習對話)?
3. The best way to learn new words is _____________ (通過看英語雜志的方式).
4. He often __________ (犯錯誤).
5. You should __________ (練習說) English as much as possible.
第四課時
Step 1 Revision
Get the students to say out the learning challenges and solutions.
Step 2 Reading
First ask the students to look through the passage to find out the challenges the writer had:
a. He couldn’t understand every word.
b. He couldn’t always make complete sentences.
c. He found English grammar was difficult.
Then study the passage.
Some points:
1. first of all = at first
2. … it doesn’t matter “不要緊, 沒關系” = Not at all. / That’s all right.
3. I was also afraid to speak in class…..
be afraid to do sth “害怕做某事” 例:Don’t be afraid to speak in class.
of doing sth Don’t be afraid of speaking in class.
of sth “害怕某事”
(that) 從句 “恐怕…” I’m afraid (that) he can’t come now.
Read the passage after the tape.
Scan the statements below the passage and write “T” of “F”.
Step 3 Writing
3b. Let the students write the letter themselves then check the answer.
第五課時
Step 1 Free talk
Ask the students to say out the good ways of learning English.
Step 2 Self check
For Ex1, let one student read the words and translate them.
The students do these exercises themselves first, then check the answers.
For ex2, divide the students into four-person groups and discuss about the interviewing. Ask some students to report their information about Xu Zheng.
Step 3 Exercises

第六課時
Step 1 Presentation
Say “Sometimes we have problems in our daily life. Such as we have disagreements with our friends. Our friends misunderstood us. We lose our games and so on. If the problems come to us, how do we deal with our problems?”
Ask the students to think about the ways of facing problems and tell the class.
Step 2 Reading
Look through the passage, find out the ways mentioned in the passage. Then study it.
Some points:
1. And unless we deal with our problems, we can…
=And if we don’t / can’t deal with our problems, we can…
unless = if not “除非,如果不”
例:Unless he is in uniform, he doesn’t look like a policeman.
2. decide (not) to do sth. “決定(不)做某事”
例:I decided not to tell him about it.
decide (that) 從句
例:I decided that I wouldn’t tell him about it.
3. regard… as… “把….看作,認為….”
例:We regard Yang Liwei as a hero.
4. strict “嚴格的”
be strict with sb. “對某人嚴格” be strict in sth “對某事嚴格”
例:The teachers are strict with us in our study.
5. instead “代替” instead of “ 代替,而不是”
例:The boy didn’t do his homework. He watched TV instead.
= The boy didn’t do his homework. Instead, he watched TV.
= The boy watched TV instead of doing his homework.
Read the passage. Encourage the students retell the contents about the passage.

Check the ways of dealing with problems in the chart in 3c.
