Unit 2 Growing pains
1. mess
（1）n. dirty or untidy state
Oh, my god! Look at your room! What a mess!
他的桌子亂成一團(tuán).
His desk is a terrible mess.
（2）v. mess up
By failing to do what you were asked, you have messed up the whole scheme.
抱歉我把所有的事情都給弄糟了。
I’m sorry that I have messed everything up.
2. be in charge of 負(fù)責(zé)，接管
他以前只是個小職員，現(xiàn)在他已經(jīng)是這個重要項(xiàng)目的負(fù)責(zé)人了。
He used to be a clerk, but now he is in charge of this important project now.
charge v. 表示要價(jià)，索價(jià)
他修理自行車收了你多少錢？
How much did he charge you for repairing the bicycle?
3. instead, instead of
eg. You should be out playing instead of working indoors.
They went there on foot instead of by bus.
Instead表示因某種原因而被另一事物或另一人“代替”，為副詞，一般都放在句末作狀語,放在句首時，常用逗號與主句分隔。
instead of 為短語介詞，表示以甲“代替”乙，后接名詞，代詞，動名詞，“而不是，而不能”
我得把工作做完，而不是出去。
I have to finish my work instead of going out.
4. now that
because of something 由于，既然
eg. 既然你駕駛考試已經(jīng)合格，你可以獨(dú)自開車了。
Now that you’ve passed your test, you can drive on your own.
既然John已經(jīng)來了，我們就立刻開始吧。
Now that John has arrived, we can begin right away.
5. feel like
（1）摸起來像
eg. 這料子摸起來像絲。
This material feels like silk.
我在那只待了兩天，但感覺卻像一個星期那么長。
I was only there for two days but it felt like a week!
（2）feel like doing sth 想要
eg. 我現(xiàn)在不想吃東西。
I don’t feel like having anything to eat now.
你想不想和我一塊散步去那里？
Do you feel like walking there with me?
一天的工作之后，我想好好休息一下。
I felt like a good rest after a day’s work.
6. pay attention to
to是介詞，后接名詞，代詞，動名詞作賓語。
eg. 人們已對保護(hù)環(huán)境投入很多注意力。
A great deal of attention has been paid to protecting the environment.
你英語講得很好，但最好對書面英語多加注意一下。
You speak English well, but you’d better pay more attention to your written English.
7. with復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)
（1）with+名/代詞+-ing分詞
eg. 下周就考試了，我沒時間玩。
With the exams coming next week, I have no time to play.
有大家對我們的支持，我們定能成功。
With everyone supporting us we can certainly succeed.
（2）with+名/代詞+-ed分詞
那個人被帶了進(jìn)來了，雙手捆在背后。
The man was brought in, with his hands tied behind his back.
他閉著眼睛，想了一會兒。
He was thinking for a while, with his eyes shut.
（3）with+名/代詞+形容詞
他張著嘴，睡得很酣。
He was fast asleep with his mouth open.
外面的噪音太大，他幾乎不能睡覺。
He could hardly get asleep with the one noise outside so loud.
（4）with+名/代詞+介詞短語
她站在那里，一只手插在衣袋里。
She stood there with her hand in her pockets.
她眼里含著淚水告別。
She said goodbye with tears in her eyes.
（5）with+名/代詞+不定式
由于沒人和他談話，他感到很悶。
With no one to talk to ,he felt bored.
有這么多工作要做，他忙極了。
With a lot of work to do, he is as busy as a bee.
（6）with+名/代詞+名詞
他滿臉微笑地告訴他通過了入學(xué)考試。
With a face all smiles, he told us that he had passed the entrance examination.
