Comic Strips
1. Teenage problems. 青少年的問題。
Teenage, adj. “十來歲的”,主要指十三歲到十九歲這個年齡段的。
e.g. They are teenage children. 他們是十幾歲的孩子
teenager, n. “十來歲的青少年”
e.g. He joined a club for teenagers. 他參加了一個青少年的俱樂部。
2. I’m getting fat. Look at my stomach. 我正在發(fā)胖,看我的肚子。
get 在這里是一個連系動詞,與形容詞一起構(gòu)成系表結(jié)構(gòu)。
e.g. He got tired after the long walk.
連系動詞除be動外,還有感官動詞:look, sound, smell, taste, feel,還有三個“變”,即:get, turn, become等
e.g. The cake tastes good.

3. Eating too much makes you unhealthy. 吃得太多使你不健康。
eating too much 動名詞短語做主語

close adj. “親密的”、“緊挨著的”

2. The TV is always on. 電視總是開著。
be on 開著的;進行中;常指電燈、電視等開著,反義詞為“off”。
e.g. The light isn’t on. He can’t be inside.

quarrel with sb. 與某人吵架

Reading
1. At the moment, painting is my favourite hobby. 目前,繪畫是我最喜歡的愛好。
moment 意思是“瞬間、片刻”等,用法有很多。
e.g. A few moments later he heard footsteps. 過了一會兒,他聽見了腳步聲。

hand 是“交、遞、給、提供”的意思。
hand in 意思是“交上、提交”。還有一個很近的詞組是hand on,意思是“傳下去、轉(zhuǎn)交”。

3. Should I focus on my homework and give up my hobbies? 我是否應(yīng)該把重點放在作業(yè)上,而放棄我的愛好?
focus 意思是“(使)聚集,(使注意力)集中于”。它既可以做及物動詞,也可以做不及物動詞。
e.g. He took the glass and focused the sun on some dried wood.
他拿出透鏡,然后把太陽光聚焦在一些干木材上。
e.g. The meeting focused on the protection of wild animals.
會議集中討論了野生動物保護問題。

achieve 意思是“完成;做到;達到(目標)”
e.g. He will never achieve anything if he doesn’t work hard.

balance 意思是“天平;平衡”,用法如下:
weigh sth. in a balance 用天平稱某物
the balance of nature 生態(tài)平衡
5. I am Grade 9 student and I am crazy about football!

crazy 本意是“瘋狂的”,這里的意思是“狂熱的、著迷的”,常與about 連用。
e.g. A crazy person set fire to the house. 一個瘋子放火燒了房子。
She is crazy about dancing. 她對跳舞著迷。
6. I’d like your advice. 我想聽聽你的意見。
advice 意思是“意見;勸告”。常和某些動詞搭配,如:give/offer advice 提出勸告; ask for sb.’s advice征求某人的意見;take/follow/accept sb.’s advice 接受某人的意見。
7. We like staying out late to play football. 我們喜歡在外面踢足球踢到很晚。
stay out 意思是“呆在外面;呆在戶外”,常用的固定詞組還有“stay up”,意思是“不睡覺,熬夜”。
e.g. Children always like to stay out to play different games.
孩子們總是喜歡呆在外面玩各種游戲。
I felt very tired because I stayed up last night.
我覺得很累,因為我昨晚熬夜了。
8. I really don’t understand why they are so strict.
我真的不明白他們?yōu)槭裁磳ξ胰绱藝绤枴?/p>
strict 在本句中的意思是“嚴格的”。be strict with sb 是“對某人要求嚴格”的意思。
e.g. They are very strict with their children. 他們對自己的孩子非常嚴格。
9. They would be most valuable. 它們將是最有價值的。
valuable 意思是“貴重的;有價值的”。如:
valuable articles 貴重物品
valuable information 重要信息
其根詞是“value”,譯為“益處;價值;估價”,用法如:
e.g. You’ll find this map of great value in helping you to get round London.

10. I hope I can offer you some useful suggestions. 我希望我能給你提供一些有用的建議。
offer意思是“(主動)給予;提出;拿出;出價;奉獻”等,用法如下:
e.g. He offered his identity card at the entrance. 他在入口處出示了身份證。
We offered him the house for 10000 pounds. 這棟房子我們向他開價1萬英鎊。
They offer their lives to art. 他們把生命奉獻給了藝術(shù)。
11. This will give you an idea of how much free time you have.
這能讓你知道自己到底有多少空閑時間。
idea的本意是“想法;理解”。
e.g. He has a clear idea of his responsibility. 他清楚地知道自己的職責(zé)是什么。
come up with an idea 想出一個辦法
have no idea 料想不到;毫無所知;不理解
12. I hope this piece of suggestion will be useful to you. 我希望這條建議能對你有用。
suggestion做“建議;方案”時是可數(shù)名詞,可以加“s”,也可以在前面加“a”。在這里用a piece of suggestion表示“一條建議”是為了強調(diào)。
e.g. At your suggestion I bought the car. 在你的建議下,我買了那輛車。
Vocabulary
1. Although I know homework is important, I become angry when there is too much to do because I will not have time for my hobbies.
盡管我知道功課很重要,但是當(dāng)作業(yè)多得做不完時,我還是會很生氣,因為我就沒有時間去何做我的事情了。
這是一個多重從句,although 引導(dǎo)的是一個讓步狀語從句,when引導(dǎo)的是一個時間狀語從句,because引導(dǎo)的是一個原因狀語從句,主句是I become angry. 所以看見這種長句不要害怕,可以學(xué)著把各種修飾成分分開,最終找到主句,就能明白作者的本意了。
2. I do not have much time to revise for tests.
revise本意是“修正;修改;再檢查”,在英式英語中有“溫習(xí)”的意思,等于review。
如:revise(one’s lessons) for the examination 復(fù)習(xí)(功課準備)迎考。

(A) ‘wh-’ words + ‘to’- infinitives
有一些動詞后面可以接疑問詞how, what, when, where, which, who再加動詞不定式,但是why沒有這種用法。這類動詞中最常用的有:ask, decide, discover, find out, forget, know, learn, remember, see, show+賓語,think, understand, want to know, wonder。如:
(1)He discovered how to open the safe. 他發(fā)現(xiàn)了打開保險柜的方法。
(2)I found out where to buy fruit cheaply. 我找到了買便宜水果的地方。
(3)I didn’t know when to switch the machine off. 我不知道什么時候關(guān)掉機器。
(4)I showed her which button to press. 我指點她應(yīng)該按哪個按鈕。
(5)She couldn’t think what to say. 她想不出說什么。
我們也可以用賓語從句表達同樣的意思,但是通常從句的主語必須與主句的主語或賓語相同,所以上述句子也可以用下面的句子表達。如:
(1)He discovered how he could open the safe.
(2)I found out where I could buy fruit cheaply.
(3)I didn’t know when I should switch the machine off.
(4)I showed her which button she should press.
(5)She couldn’t think what she could say.
(B) Sentence Types 句子種類
我們通常使用的句子可以分為四種:陳述句(肯定句和否定句)、疑問句(一般疑問句和特殊疑問句)、祈使句、感嘆句。陳述句常用來提供信息;疑問句用來咨詢信息或要求知道某件事情;祈使句用于提出命令或要求;感嘆句用于表達一種強烈的感情。
(1)It’s a sunny day. 今天是晴天。 (一種簡單的陳述)
(2)Mr. Wu isn’t at home today. 吳老師今天不在家。(也是一種簡單的陳述)
(3)Are the children playing games? 孩子們在玩游戲嗎?(在向別人咨詢信息)
(4)Where is the nearest police station, please? 請問,最近的警察局在哪里?
(請別人告知某事)
(5)Don’t put the glass here. Please put it over there. 不要把杯子放在這兒。請把它放那兒。(發(fā)出命令)
