        Step 2.Grammar

        一. 省略--語法歸納

        為了避免重復(fù),或為了使句子更簡練,在一些句子中常常省去某些成分,這在英語中

        省略。

        省略可出現(xiàn)在簡單句,并列句和主從復(fù)合句中,省略部分可以是主語、謂語、表語、狀語、定語等。

        1. 并列句中某些相同成分的省略。如:

        This beeper(尋呼機) works well, but that one doesn’t (work well).

        All uranium atoms do not have the same atomic weight. Some of them weigh 234 units, some (of them)(weigh) 235 units, and some (of them) (weigh)238 units.

        所有的鈾原子并非都有相同的原子量。其中有的為234,有的為235,而有的為238。

        2. when, while, if, as if , though (although), as, until, once, whether, unless, where 等連詞連接的狀語從句中,常省略跟主句相同的主語和be動詞。如:

        When (water is) pure, water is a colorless liquid.

        When (I am) in trouble, I always turn to her for help.

        Errors, if (there are) any, should be corrected.

        3.當(dāng)見到“when(或if, where, wherever, whenever, as soon as, as fast as, than等)+possible/necessary等”時,可理解為中間省略了it is或it was. 如:

        Answer these questions, if (it is) possible without referring to the book.

        When (it is) necessary you can help us to do something.

        4.有形式主語it的主語從句可省略that.

        It seems (that) Joe is out, not Jack.

        It’s a pity you can’t operate a computer.

        5.在限制性定語從句中可省略作賓語的關(guān)系代詞whom, which, that.

        That is the naughty boy we talked about last week.

        6.在direction (方向),way( 方式),distance (距離),time (時間),times (倍數(shù))等后面所接的定語從句中常省略that, which, in which.

        The direction (in which)we move a body can be changed.

        The distance (which/that) light travels in one second is 300,000 kilometres.

        7.命令句、感嘆句、部分第一人稱的陳述句、部分問句和答句中省略最為常見。

        Open the door! Why not? Why so? Anybody wishing to go?

        8.用so, not 或其它手段來省略上文或問句中的一部分或整個句義,是高考的?柬椖俊

        --Can Jim do this work? ----I think so./ I don’t think so.( I think not)

        9.用to 表示前述動詞(包括謂語和非謂語動詞)及其短語。

        ----Would you like to join us in the discussion? -----I’d like to.

        I wanted to go swimming, but my mother told me not to.

        10.在某些動詞后含有賓語補語或主語補語的復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)中省略to be 或being的情況。

        They found the answer (to be) right.

        This conclusion proved (to be) correct.

        11.新聞標(biāo)題要求簡練醒目,需根據(jù)上下文的語境推敲其省略部分。

        Boy 14, rescued from cliff face.

        (A boy of 14 has been rescued from cliff face.)

        American President to fly to London.

        (American President is to fly to London.)

        12.注意在一些固定短語中某些介詞的省略。

        have trouble (in) sleeping

        spend … (in) doing, be busy (in) doing,

        They are (of) the same age.

        There is no use (in) explaining it to her any more.

        He is carrying out this experiment (in) the same way as I did yesterday.
