        Reading, speaking and reporting

        1. Read the two reports of the same event below. How are the reports different? Who do you think wrote each report? What do you think are facts and what are opinions?

        2. What would be a good headline for each story? What pictures would you use?

        A small group of fewer than a hundred people caused trouble for workers at our cityˇs most successful company today. The rude and noisy group made it difficult for the workers to get into the factory. Fortunately, most of the troublemakers left peacefully after the police arrived, but a few of them fought with the companyˇs guards and had to be taken to the police station.

        More than ninety responsible and caring citizens made their voices heard today. The citizens, all of whom love nature and our planet, demonstrated outside the cityˇs worst polluter. Brave and strong, the activists talked to workers outside the factory and left a positive message about protecting the earth. The peaceful meeting ended when the company sent out a group of angry men armed with sticks to fight with the citizens.

        3. Do you own reporting.

        Work in pairs or groups. Go back to the Speaking activity and look at the events you chose. Choose one of the events and write a short newspaper article about it. How would you report it? What pictures and headline would you use?

        Writing

        Write a paragraph in which you compare two kinds of media, for example websites and newspapers.

        When you write your paragraph, you should explain how the two media are similar to or different from each other. By writing about the similarities and differences, you will make it easier for the reader to understand the things you are writing about.

        Before you write, think about the media you are going to compare. What characteristics or features are the most important? What differences or similarities will help the reader understand the media you are comparing? What can be learnt from the comparison?
