《百萬英鎊》是講一個(gè)貧窮、誠(chéng)實(shí)的人，也就是這個(gè)故事的主人公收到了一對(duì)兄弟的信，信里面送給了他一百萬英鎊。原來這對(duì)兄弟打了一個(gè)賭，賭如果一個(gè)貧窮、誠(chéng)實(shí)的人收到天上掉下的一百萬英鎊，他會(huì)有怎樣的結(jié)果？哥哥認(rèn)為他會(huì)餓死，因?yàn)樗麩o法證明這些錢是他自己的，會(huì)受到別人的'懷疑，連銀行都不會(huì)讓他存錢。弟弟則認(rèn)為他會(huì)過得很好，于是他們兄弟倆將一百萬英鎊的支票借給了這個(gè)貧窮的人，并出國(guó)呆了三十天。沒想到在這段時(shí)間內(nèi)，人們對(duì)這位突然暴富的罕見富翁，竟拼命地拉攏他，從免費(fèi)吃飯，買衣服，到免費(fèi)住宿，一個(gè)個(gè)像乞丐一樣討好他，并不斷提高他的社會(huì)地位，一直到了除王室外最高的公爵之上！不光如此，他還得到了一位好妻子和三萬英鎊的銀行利息，最后還從兩兄弟那兒得到了一份很好的工作。過著非常非常幸福的生活。
看到這兒，我很羨慕這位如此“幸運(yùn)”的主人公，但同時(shí)我又想：人們之所以討好他，不就是因?yàn)楫?dāng)時(shí)人們太看重金錢了嗎？拜金主義是可恥的，不勞而獲更不應(yīng)該！金錢不是萬能的，世界上還有許多比金錢更重要的東西……
